I do understand this scissor takedown resulted in a high number of injuries in any grappling or MMA tournaments. But I do believe it happened because not many athlere are familiar with it, so they don't train the technique properly, either as the "doer" or the "receiver". As you can see, in Pencak Silat, there are so many practioners apply this technique during practice as well as tournaments, and there are not many reported got injuried because of this technique. We can compare to German Suplex, it is a very powerful technique, and super dangerous. But because of so many athlete are familiar with it, so they can adjust and make less injuries during the practice or tournament.

It is used a lot in Capoeira and no one is complaining, the problem is not in the technique itself, it is more how to execute and receive it. Stop castrating Jiu Jitsu! What happened to the guys leg is horrible and I feel so sorry for him. But the lessons is to teach this take down more often in a safe way.

One of the things ive wondered about this takedown is that, in sport silat (silat olahraga), one of the major sport martial arts in my country and the SEA region, the scissor takedown is commonly used, and despite that, I've not seen much in terms of injuries like the ones Rokas and others have received while being on the receiving end of this takedown. Looking through videos of the technique, I've noticed that the tori doesn't have a grip on the uke when performing the technique in sports silat, and the uke can much more freely fall out of the takedown/free themselves after being taken down without getting their legs binded, this is what I've noticed at a glance, the difference between the takedown in these two sports. For those curious about it, one can look it up on youtube right now under "teknik guntingan silat". example (ua-cam.com/video/L3DgICYDNaI/v-deo.html)

As a Black Belt with over a decade of experience, I couldn't agree more with most of your points. This is a technique that should never be executed in the gym during live rounds. Its simply to dangerous & happens to quickly. The only place this technique is acceptable in my opinion, would be a high level competition with Professional Athletes who know what they signed up for & understand the risks a technique like this presents.

problem with kyokushin styles are that they don’t allow you to punch to head. and yes, i know dojos do it, but majority dont. this is a terrible instinct/habit to pick up. kudo’s striking emphasizes close range and staying the pocket, possible for grappling and takedowns. ive read that the space helmet they wear for competition makes your head a bigger target so youre going have a harder time slipping punches.

hands up at all times is the best advice i can give to somebody that has never striked before. High guard is the best for novices (& arguably even pros honestly). Dont worry much about the torso, do abdominal exercises, condition it. Unless you fight Canelo chances are yo don't have to worry much about the mid section, in fact sometimes its good to have it exposed to bait in kicks & catch them.

Striking is the easiest thing to do but the most difficult to execute. Striking is easy but to hit is not. 😂 The opponent is not a punching bag, they move around. That's why in Silat Sport we don't hit the head, other than for safety and cultural bias, hitting the body is easier than hitting the head. The body is a bigger and a stiff target. No matter if the opponent moving around, the body is there at the center. It is similar like shooting a gun, the police will always aim the body. Striking need confidence and judgement, that's what sparring is for. Only attack when we are confidence and must always have a good judgment because we still need to defend ourselves from the opponent attacks. There is a difference between committed attacks and fishing attacks. The committed attacks are the ones we really want to destroy the opponent, the fishing ones is just to make the opponent react and giving us the opening. But this only apply in ring fight, for tournaments. For street fight it is a different thing. There is no time to anything, it is just the faster the winner and luck do play a part. We are not prepared to fight, never. Nobody can BS me about it. 😁
